Get started with Ledger — Ledger.com/start®

Set up your Ledger hardware wallet safely and confidently. This guide walks you through unboxing, initializing, backing up your recovery phrase, installing Ledger Live, and essential security best practices so you’re ready to manage crypto securely.

  • Official onboarding: Begin at the official start page: Ledger.com/start.
  • Ledger Live: Download the desktop or mobile app at Ledger Live to manage assets and apps.
  • Buy only from official sources: Purchase devices from the official store to avoid tampered units.

What is Ledger?

Ledger devices store your private keys offline (cold storage), so they never sit on an internet-connected computer. This dramatically reduces attack surface and keeps your crypto safe. Learn about models and specs on Ledger Wallets.

Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the companion app for managing accounts, installing coin apps, staking, and checking portfolio value. Download official releases from Ledger Live.

Buy devices safely

Only buy from the official store or authorized resellers. Counterfeit or tampered devices are a real risk; avoid marketplace listings from unknown sellers.

Recovery & backup

During setup you’ll receive a recovery phrase. Store it offline and never type it into a website or photograph it. See detailed guidance at Recovery.

Step-by-step setup — unbox, initialize, and secure your device

Ledger.com/start provides the official guided flow and is the safest place to begin. Here’s a clear checklist you can read before you start: unbox, confirm packaging, connect to your computer or phone, initialize as a new device, choose a PIN, write down your recovery phrase, install Ledger Live, and add accounts. Each step requires careful attention — the recovery phrase is the single most important element for restoring funds if the device is lost or damaged.

1) Inspect the package and unbox

Only initialize a device that arrives sealed from the official store. If the packaging looks tampered with, contact Support and do not proceed. Ledger devices never come with a pre-filled recovery phrase — any device that does is compromised.

2) Initialize and choose a PIN

Connect the device using the supplied cable, open Ledger Live, and choose “Initialize as new device.” Create a PIN that is memorable but not guessable; avoid obvious sequences. Ledger will show the PIN entry on the device screen — PINs are never transmitted to your computer or phone.

3) Record your recovery phrase securely

Your device will generate a recovery phrase (normally 24 words). Write the words down in order on the supplied card or other secure medium. Consider using a metal backup plate to protect against fire or water. Never store your recovery phrase in cloud storage or on a photo. For extra information, see the full guide at Recovery.

4) Install Ledger Live and add accounts

Install the official Ledger Live app from Ledger Live, then use it to install the currency apps you need on your device (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Create accounts in Ledger Live and verify that balances show up. Ledger Live requires you to confirm each transaction on the physical device screen for security.

5) Do a test transaction

Before moving large sums, send a small test transaction to confirm both send and receive flows. Check that the receiving address is correct and confirm the transaction details on the hardware device. Ledger Live and the device display the transaction values separately — always verify on the device screen.

Security best practices

Security is layered: keep firmware and Ledger Live up to date, only install apps from Ledger Live, enable device passphrase if you need a hidden wallet, store recovery phrases offline, and consider using multiple devices for large holdings. Never share your recovery phrase or approve a transaction you didn’t initiate. For full security recommendations, visit Security.

Restoring on a new device

If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, purchase a new Ledger device and choose “Restore” during initialization. Carefully enter your recovery phrase on the device — never enter it into a computer. After restore, reinstall the required apps with Ledger Live and your accounts will reappear.

Ledger Live features & integrations

Ledger Live supports staking, portfolio overviews, swaps, and compatibility with selected third-party wallets and dApps. Always ensure any third-party integration supports hardware confirmations and that you verify transactions on your device. Developers can explore integration options under Developer resources.

Buying and selling via Ledger Live

Ledger Live may offer built-in onramps and swap features through trusted partners. Fees, limits, and partners vary by region — always check terms and fee disclosures in the app. For general questions, consult our FAQ or reach out to Support.

Troubleshooting common issues

If Ledger Live doesn’t detect your device, try a different cable or USB port, confirm you’re using the latest Ledger Live from Ledger Live, and restart your machine. Bluetooth pairing issues can often be solved by removing old pairings and retrying. If a recovery phrase fails during restore, double-check word order and spelling — words must be exact.

Long-term custody tips

For long-term storage, consider splitting holdings across devices, using a metal backup plate for recovery phrases, and using multi-signature or institutional custody solutions when managing very large sums. Maintain one canonical recovery phrase stored offline and test restore processes periodically (with small amounts) to ensure access.

Privacy and purchasing

We respect user privacy. For more information on how we manage data and user rights, consult our Privacy policy. Purchase only from the official store and check order confirmations to ensure authenticity.
